You know those cute wine picnic baskets that are always on display in
the grocery store, or department stores? I’m talking about the ones
lined with gingham fabric, with built in straps and pockets for a
tablecloth, napkins, wine glasses, a corkscrew, and other necessary utensils.
Some include a small cutting board and cheese cutters, and others
include plates, forks. Still others include an insulated pouch for a bottle
of wine. The baskets range in price from $40 to $200, and look like
they might be perfect for a fun and romantic outing.
Well, they are both fun, and romantic. There’s something about an
old-fashioned picnic basket that really sets a fun mood. The more
traditional wicker baskets with two flaps that lift up to reveal the picnic
packed with are more attractive and nostalgic, and hold more, but
can get heavy. The ones that are inside a backpack might be more
comfortable if you are planning to hike to your picnic spot.
So what food do you put in wine picnic baskets? Traditionally fried
chicken, potato salad, and fruit, but any food that’s not too messy can
go inside. Bring wine if you like, but don’t forget a corkscrew, if one
isn’t included in the picnic basket. Cheese and bread (bring a bread
knife!), are good choices, and fresh strawberries if available. A good
gourmet chocolate is particularly romantic. You can pack your favorite
sandwiches (pack the sliced tomatoes separately -otherwise the bread
will get soggy). Or better yet, pack all the supplies, and make the
sandwiches during the picnic.
Wine Picnic baskets make a great gift idea for a romantic date on
Valentine’s Day, even if it’s cold outside. Arrange to rent a cabin with a
fireplace, and then go pick up your loved one. When you get to the
cabin, build a roaring fire, and spread the picnic out on the
floor in front of the fire place. If it’s not too cold, then go ahead
and have your picnic outside. Wear warm clothes, and sit close for
warmth!
You don’t have to be limited to Valentine’s Day. One year the kids and
I took my husband on a Father’s Day picnic at the Princeton
Battlefield. The kids could run around to their heart’s content, while my husband
and I sliced cheese for one another. We brought both a bottle of
wine, and a bottle of grape juice, so the kids could drink from the wine
glasses, too.
Finally, what else should you take on the picnic? Depends on who is
going, of course! If the kids are with you, a ball, and a Frisbee are
good choices. If alone, then something romantic (like a valentines gift,
an engagement ring, or flowers) can be hidden inside. Either way, make
it fun!
