Shopping for Wine doesn’t have to be complicated. Here a a couple of rules to ensure you get the right wine for the right occasion:
Just drink what you enjoy
It’s your taste - your palate will tell you what you like
the cost of a bottle is not an indicator for quality
Know about the grapes to begin to know the wine
here is a great intro the different grape varieties
Don’t be afraid to experiment Â
Try what you haven’t had before. Variety is one of the keys to knowing wine.
Every bottle of wine is different. You maybe surprised and discover new varieties you
haven’t considered before.
Find a good Wine Store
and a knowledgeable wine clerk. Ask questions and learn from them. That’sÂ
what they are there for. The better stores have a wide variety of wines and display the
bottles on the side.
Think of the foods dominant flavor
when you go to buy a wine for a particular meal. Either try to contrast or to match that
flavor.
Compliment Food and Wine
Food and wine need to compliment each other - not overpower one another
match richness with richness, texture with texture, intensity with intensity.
Light foods need light bodied wines; heavier foods need full bodied wines
Match the Wine to the Sauce
If the meal has a sauce that is the predominantly flavor match the wine to the sauce
Contrast can be good
You can also contrast the predominantly flavor with a wine that is it’s opposite as long
as you match intensity with intensity
Match your Wine to the Occasion
Splurge on good expensive wines for the really special occasions and enjoy the good,      less expensive wines more often
